Open Dreams Scholar Bernes Lorier Atabonfack is currently in San Diego, California, where he is set for a poster presentation at the prestigious Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) conference—one of the world’s leading gatherings in machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Bernes is showcasing his collaborative research titled “Beyond Data Scarcity: Quality Barriers to Trustworthy AI in Low-Resource Medical Imaging.” This innovative work focuses on improving the quality of medical imaging in low-resource hospitals, enabling both doctors and AI systems to make more accurate, fair, and reliable diagnostic decisions.

Bernes studied Computer Science at the University of Buea, graduating in 2022. His excellent accomplishment earned him admission at Carnegie Mellon University - Africa (CMU-A Rwanda) in 2023 under the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program. While in Rwanda, he distinguished himself, serving as a teaching assistant before moving to the USA, where he has immersed himself in cutting-edge tech research.
