A new Chapter begins at UC Berkeley | Mboh Promise

Dear network,

I am excited to share that I have been awarded a two-year, fully funded Mastercard Foundation scholarship to pursue a Master of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley, beginning this fall.

The University of California, Berkeley, is ranked the No. 1 public university in the United States, and I couldn’t be happier to be among the students admitted to the UC Berkeley Journalism School, where I will specialize in Narrative Writing.

This marks the end of my five-year journey with Cameroon’s first English-language daily newspaper, The Guardian Post, where I worked as a Reporter and later as Bureau Chief from August 2021 to August 2026.

I want to thank everyone at The Guardian Post who welcomed me during my undergraduate internship, trained me, and eventually decided to bring me onto the team. I am grateful for the opportunities, lessons, friendships, and experiences that shaped my career.

Special thanks to my academic supervisor, Professor Muluh Henry, my Managing Editor, Doh Bertrand, and Tina Lee, for taking the time to write recommendation letters that contributed to my admission into this prestigious program.

I also want to thank Open Dreams Educational NGO through Evita Afungfege for guiding me through the essays and the application process. My appreciation also goes to Pechuqui Laurata, Daniel Ekonde, and everyone who supported me in one way or another throughout this journey.

Above all, I want to thank God and my family for always standing by me and believing in me, even during difficult and challenging times.

I am grateful for how far I have come, and I am determined and excited about this next chapter!
