My name is Serena-Axelle Nga Ebode. I am a young girl who grew up in a little suburb in Yaoundé, who was groomed in the upbringing that education was the key to unlocking the world, and with the right exposure to the haven of dreams coming true, Open Dreams– mine came true– as I now pursue my studies in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Miami, in the United States of America.

As the political climate grew tense, going home seemed less possible. Yet when asked how I felt being far from home for over a year, I would barely mention feeling ‘homesick.’ This is because of what I have come to understand home to be: the hearts of those who carry you dearly and warmly. It is the presence of those with whom you find solace.

I am beyond grateful to God for the home I have found at Open Dreams.

As I landed on U.S. soil, Darina (Open Dreams ‘Bafoussam scholar, Ashinaga scholar) welcomed me at the airport, with some balloons, a great smile, and hugs that whispered: ‘Welcome to your new home’. While she was in Miami for a week, she taught me the basics of navigating the new environment and thriving in my curriculum. My transition felt seamless thanks to her.

As winter approached, the anxiety of spending this festive season alone was behind me as I traveled to Massachusetts to spend it with my longtime mate and friend, Mohammed Moumie (Open Dreams ‘20, Harvard). As he gave me a tour of Harvard and provided a detailed explanation of the university's history. He also introduced me to his large African community on campus. I couldn’t help but feel blessed and recharged.

Over the summer, I flew to New York City, known to be the City That Never Sleeps. I was warmly welcomed at the airport by Mohammed and Joyce Temkeng (OD ‘Bafoussam, Columbia University). As we drove home, I was certain the week would be wholesome.

It exceeded my expectations. We toured the city with Styve Lekane and Bemsibom Nkuo and tried kayaking. I was a little scared, but it turned out to be therapeutic. We also hosted a get-together at home. We cooked the meal we all missed (eru), played games, and had thoughtful conversations on internships and investments. I knew this was the reset I needed.

This is only a highlight of a great time. I received a warm welcome from Dilys Fongong in Ohio, enjoyed Desmond Fongwa's hospitality in Chicago, and experienced amazing hosting from Darina Mbiakop in Richmond. As the African proverb goes: It takes a village to raise a child. I am happy my village is not limited to my ethnicity but includes what Open Dreams has provided for me: a home away from home.
