The last three weeks marked a significant milestone in my life, as I finally had the opportunity, for the first time, to spend quality time in my ancestral land, Rwanda.

As I landed in Kigali, the excitement of reconnecting with my roots was overwhelming. Rwanda, with its clean streets, lush hills, and welcoming people, felt like a warm embrace from the past.

One of the most powerful experiences was visiting the traditional royal residences. These houses, rich in history and symbolism, were once homes to ancient Rwandan kings. Inside, I learned about the different sections of the palace — where the king rested with his wives, where his weapons were kept ready for battle, and even a smaller house used to store wine and milk. I was fascinated to learn about the food testers, individuals who had to try every royal meal to prevent poisoning — a role so dangerous that very few held it for long.

But perhaps the most striking moment of my trip was encountering the Inyambo — majestic Ankole cattle known for their long, elegant horns and regal demeanor. These cows are more than just livestock; they are considered royal treasures. Historically, they were presented to the king during ceremonies as symbols of loyalty and gratitude. Today, they still hold cultural significance. As a touching tradition, a groom often gifts Inyambo to the bride’s family — a gesture that embodies love, commitment, and honor.

This trip was not just about sightseeing. It was about rediscovery — of culture, history, and identity. I met relatives, explored historical landmarks, and captured moments that will stay with me forever. Rwanda felt like more than a country — it felt like coming home.

As I prepare to return to Cameroon - the Country where I was born of Rwandan parents who fled the 1994 Rwandan genocide, I carry with me not just photographs and memories, but a deeper appreciation of where I come from. I hope this journey inspires others to reconnect with their heritage and celebrate the rich stories that make us who we are.
