There are moments in life that quietly change your direction, and for me, this is one of them.

After completing my GCE Advanced Level, I thought I had a clear idea of where my path was leading. But one thing remained certain: I wanted to pursue my university education on a scholarship, beyond the borders of my home country. With that in mind, I took a leap of faith and chose a gap year, dedicating my time fully to applications, growth, and preparation.

On the day I received my admission and scholarship offer from the MasterCard Foundation to study Computer Science at the African Leadership College of Higher Education (ALCHE) in Mauritius, I was actually working on an essay for another school. It was an unexpected moment, one that reminded me that sometimes, the doors meant for you open when you are simply busy doing your best in the field and staying consistent.

Before this opportunity, my journey had already been shaped by communities and experiences that stretched and refined me, from being a TiC Summit alumnus, a Skolarr Student Ambassador, an #OpenDreams Scholar, to volunteering with DeWise Foundation and the Bright Future Builders Initiative. Each space contributed in its own way, preparing me for this next step.

This scholarship is more than financial support to me. It is a responsibility and a starting point. As someone who aspires to become a medical robotics engineer, my time at ALCHE represents the foundation upon which I hope to build solutions that can impact lives meaningfully.

I am deeply grateful to God for His guidance throughout this journey. To my elder brother, Esoh Rene Tanwieh, thank you for being my constant support system. To the Open Dreams Educational NGO co-founders and the entire community, Mr. James Akaba, and Seka Jean Blaise, your belief and guidance have been instrumental. I am equally thankful to my mentors, Mr. Bill Agha, Mr. Afopezi Moses, Mr. Romaric Lonfonyuy, and Miss Britney Moukoko, for their wisdom and encouragement. And to my peer mentors, Anoh Precious Akwe and Nelson Fodjo Kamdoum, thank you for the “60-minute rule,” which truly made a difference during my application journey.

This is just the beginning, and I carry this opportunity with humility, purpose, and a commitment to make the most of it.
