Climate Change is real, so let's talk Climate Action! In an exponentially increasing pattern, Climate Change continues to impose a great threat to humanity. On the other hand, a majority of the population is unaware and even when aware, lack the proper knowledge on the basic things they can do to help fight against Climate Change at a personal level.
In April 2022, I received an email from Youths Inspiration congratulating me for the approval and the funding of my project titled "Tree planting and sensitization campaign for Environmental Sustainability". Passionate about environmental well-being, I opted to focus on raising awareness on the threat that Climate Change represents, the need for Climate Action and the basic things the population can do to join the fight against Climate Change and mitigate its effect on our community.
With a team of specialists, we kick started the execution of the project in May 2022 and on the 17th of June 2022, we executed the final stage of the project. We organized a Tree Planting event at the Etoug-Ebe Catholic Church in Yaounde. Through this, we encouraged the youths to embark on a journey to environmental sustainability by enabling them to learn about and engage into activities such as tree planting. Through the Sensitization and Tree planting activity, we fostered their knowledge on the importance of trees and the role they play in mitigating Climate crisis.
Acknowledging the necessity of mitigating the Climate crisis, Youths Inspiration in partnership with Open Dreams and Game Changers embarked on the execution of this project. Beyond addressing the issue of Climate change and environmental sustainability, our audience, predominantly made of youths, were also exposed to the various opportunities which are available for them within the various organizations implementing this project.
The event consisted of sessions on Climate Change and its impact to our community, Climate Action, the Importance of tree and crop planting towards Climate action and presentations of the organizing bodies (Youths Inspiration, Open Dreams, Game Changers). Our audience had the opportunity to listen to amazing speakers and intellectually loaded individuals talk about environmental sustainability and the opportunities available for the youth. We then engaged in a tree planting activity during which our volunteers had the opportunity to dig holes and plant trees around the church's premises. The event was concluded by a photo shooting session, after which we all communed over some snacks before departing to our various destinations.
The event was a great success thanks to Youths Inspiration, Open Dreams, Game Changers and most importantly the Etoug-Ebe Catholic Church. We had a turn out of 70+ participants who returned to their homes informed and empowered to take small actions to join the fight against Climate Change. As Martha Goedert rightly said, "If you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together." The execution of this project will have hence not been possible without the inputs of Nebah Bernadin, Mbohmely Valery, Njobe Kevin, Nchotu Faith, Teh Triumph, Poutum Ashley and Seka Blaise. Special thanks to Miss Kyria Kah and Muchuo Clifford for their amazing support.
Let's join our efforts into saving our environment and creating a safe space not only for us, but for the generations to come. We hope that this project serves as a strong foundation for other projects still to come. We, the youth, have to keep in mind that we are the change we have been waiting for.
