Patients and the public are the real experts, not researchers. Why? Because of their lived experiences.

This was the theme of the Patient & Public Involvement in Research (PPI) workshop I was honored to attend at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).

We reviewed different approaches, theories & strategies to involve patients and the public in research. More importantly, we designed ideas with co-creation groups to solve specific health problems.

Community engagement is the future of research, contrary to the rigidity and unrealistic assumptions of extractive research, which lacks fluidity to meet human values. Why? Because the communities (especially ethnic minorities) who need the help don’t get it in most cases.

PPI builds trust, with a clear value proposition, and reciprocity for equity.
