Lessons from the closed-door leadership conference at the British High Commission, Yaounde - Cameroon | Britney B. Moukoko

Open Dreams

On October 3rd, 2024, I found myself at the British High Commission, surrounded by an atmosphere charged with ambition and intellect. The closed-door leadership conference was a gathering of influential personalities, all eager to explore the depths of effective leadership.

Professor Jean Emmanuel Pondi, the convener of the event, opened with insights that resonated deeply. He delved into the qualities that define a great leader—integrity, vision, and resilience. His discussion of various leadership styles was equally illuminating, as he shared compelling case studies of historical figures like Nelson Mandela, Patrice Emery Lumumba, and Thomas Isidore Sankara. Each story was a testament to how these remarkable leaders transformed their nations and reshaped the world, challenging the status quo and igniting revolutionary change.

As I sat there, surrounded by this powerful discourse, I felt a surge of inspiration. The room was alive with potential, and I envisioned myself as part of this lineage of change-makers. Could I be the next Maya Angelou, the next Ellen Johnson? A world of endless possibilities spread out before me.

During the Q&A session, I mustered the courage to pose a thought-provoking question, one that seemed to linger in the air long after I spoke. To my surprise, my inquiry caught the attention of the newly appointed British High Commissioner. After the conference, he sought me out, with a smile on his face.

In our conversation, he expressed his admiration for my accomplishments, especially considering I had begun my leadership journey at just 14 years old. His words of encouragement fueled my aspirations further, and he shared valuable advice that I will carry with me as I continue to pursue my goals. “I look forward to seeing more from you,” he said, leaving me with a sense of purpose and determination.

What an unforgettable experience it was.
