Empowering Rural Youth to Dream Beyond Their Circumstances | Frank A. Abaiweh, MD

" Talent is universal, but opportunity is not". This simple truth has become one of the guiding principles of my life and the driving force behind the mission of Open Dreams.

As I began my journey serving in a rural community in the North West Region of Cameroon, I made a commitment to myself: no matter how demanding my responsibilities became, I would always create time to inspire and mentor young people because I know firsthand that a single conversation can change the trajectory of a life.

Recently I had the privilege of speaking with students at St. Thérèse Catholic Comprehensive High School, Sabongari, Donga-Mantung Division. What I expected to be a career talk became one of the most profound reminders of why our work at Open Dreams matters.

Standing before those students, I saw reflections of my younger self, a little boy from a humble background who dared to dream of becoming a medical doctor. It was a dream that often seemed impossible. My years in secondary school were filled with challenges, uncertainty, and moments of doubt. Yet through resilience, hard work, and the support of mentors who believed in me, I overcame those obstacles and eventually realized that dream. Today, I have the privilege of serving my community as a medical doctor while dedicating my life to creating opportunities for others.

As our conversation unfolded, I asked the students about their future aspirations. Their responses were sincere, but they revealed something much deeper. Most could only mention professions they encountered within their immediate surroundings. Then came a moment that left a lasting impression on me: many of them had little knowledge about engineering; they did not reasonably know what an engineer does.

It was not a reflection of their ability or intelligence. It was a reflection of limited exposure.

In that moment, I was reminded that countless young people are not held back by a lack of talent; they are held back by a lack of opportunity, information, and mentorship.

How many future scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, researchers, innovators, and leaders remain undiscovered simply because no one has shown them what is possible?

That experience reaffirmed a lesson I have come to believe deeply: young people cannot aspire to what they have not been exposed to. Exposure expands imagination. Mentorship builds confidence. Opportunity transforms potential into purpose.

It was therefore a privilege to introduce these students to the work we do at Open Dreams, connecting African youth with scholarships, leadership programs, research opportunities, mentorship, and a global community that believes in their potential.

More importantly, I wanted them to understand that their background does not define their future, and that the place where they begin should never determine how far they can go.

As I left the school that day, my conviction was stronger than ever. We cannot wait for opportunities to reach young people; we must intentionally bring opportunities to where they are. Every classroom visited, every story shared, every mentor connected, and every dream encouraged has the power to change a life and transform entire communities.

This is more than outreach. It is a movement. Every young person deserves not only the freedom to dream, but also the opportunity to achieve those dreams, regardless of where they come from.

This is the spirit of Open Dreams.
