To inspire excellence in the relentless pursuit of our dreams, we take pride in celebrating the remarkable milestones of our community members who are pushing boundaries and helping address global challenges. Today, we spotlight Gergino Chounna Yemele, who has successfully defended a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Padova in Italy.
Dr. Chounna Yemele’s academic journey is one marked by a deep commitment to addressing real-world problems. Before pursuing a PhD program, he obtained his Master of Engineering from the National Advanced School of Public Works - Yaoundé, where he built a strong foundation in Engineering and Environmental Systems. His transition from Cameroon to a leading European research institution reflects not only academic excellence but also a clear vision: to contribute meaningfully to understanding and mitigating environmental risks. And that all starts with a DREAM; a big one!

During his doctoral research, Gergino Chounna Yemele focused on one of the most urgent environmental challenges of our time—coastal vulnerability. His work sought to answer critical questions that have far-reaching implications for communities around the world:
How exposed are coastal populations today, even in data-scarce environments?
How might this exposure evolve by 2050?
What role do human activities play in land subsidence?
How will future subsidence intensify coastal risks?
Through this research, he contributes valuable insights into how climate change, human activity, and environmental dynamics intertwine, especially in vulnerable coastal regions.
Dr. Chounna Yemele’s research has been published in leading scientific platforms, including:
A recent paper in Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences (NHESS), exploring coastal exposure and future risks.
A co-authored publication in Nature, one of the world’s most prestigious scientific journals.
These contributions underscore the global relevance of his research.
When passion, engagement, and consistency meet opportunity, many possibilities emerge. This is the story of Dr. Gergino Chounna Yemele. From Yaoundé to the global research stage, his story is a determination to attain his full potential to contribute meaningfully in tackling some of the world’s challenges.

We celebrate this milestone and look forward to the continued impact of Dr. Gergino Chounna Yemele in shaping a more resilient and sustainable future.
