On August 21, 2025, at approximately 8am, while traveling to Douala for an event (the Cameroon Youths Award), Dr. Platine Nyuyki’s vehicle was stopped by unidentified armed men at Waynama, Bui Division.

The armed men demanded his identification, which was provided. They further demanded that he surrenders his phone. Dr. Platine Nyuyki explained that his phone contained confidential patient medical records as part of his duties as a medical doctor who sometimes communicates with patients virtually. Despite his explanation, the armed men insisted.

While he was walking toward the passenger vehicle to retrieve the phone, he was followed and brutally assaulted by more than five individuals for trying to explain the need for privacy for the patients he sometimes consulted online. They:

            •           Slapped, kicked, and beat him to the ground

            •           Used sticks to strike him repeatedly

            •           Threatened him with firearms

As reported by our anonymous source the driver accompanying Dr. Platine Nyuyki pleaded for mercy but was ordered to leave the scene, leaving Platine behind.

Dr. Platine Nyuyki was held against his will, forced to sit under guard, and subjected to intimidation. He was later released under unclear circumstances. No formal charges or allegations were communicated to him at any point except for explaining the risks of breaching medical privacy ethics.

Injuries and Impact

            •           Physical Injuries: Multiple bodily contusions sustained from kicks, slaps, and beatings with sticks.

            •           Psychological Impact: Severe emotional distress and trauma from assault, unlawful detention, and threats to life. He cried at the scene as he lamented about his service for a community whose youths assaulted him.

            •           Professional Impact: Temporary loss of ability to continue medical outreach missions to suburbs due to safety concerns.

Despite this incident, he remains firm with his resolve to serve. His experience highlights the dire situation of the region and the risks sometimes involved with serving in a conflict affected community.

NB: Dr. Platine Nyuyki is visionary leader, founder and recent Mandela Washington Fellow 2025. He is a passionate community health activist who believe in providing care even in conflict affected communities where he frequently faces high levels of security risks. Dr. Platine Nyuyki has provided voluntary professional medical services across Jakiri in the North West Region of Cameroon and surrounding remote villages, carrying out free general consultations, affordable ultrasonography for pregnant women, and surgical procedures without discrimination reaching thousands in this community. Furthermore he has been the lifeline for critical obstetrical care in the community at the Jakiri District Hospital.
