Open Dreams Scholars Unite at Columbia University: A Convergence of Excellence

Open Dreams Scholars, Styve Lekane (Ashesi, UC Berkeley) and Mohamed Moumie (Harvard University), alongside Vincent Mcebo from Ghana, recently met with Open Dreams Scholars Joyce Temkeng and Bemsimbom Nkuo (both at Columbia University) on the historic campus of Columbia University, an Ivy League institution nestled in the heart of New York City. As a global symbol of academic excellence and leadership, Columbia provided the perfect backdrop for this inspiring gathering.

This meeting of Scholars—each of whom has earned their place at some of the world’s most competitive universities—highlights the extraordinary journey of young Cameroonians (and Africans) who dared to dream beyond borders and immediate circumstances. It speaks to what becomes possible when talent, opportunity, and purpose converge.

Representing a broad spectrum of academic disciplines, these Scholars bring with them not only intellectual brilliance but a shared passion for community impact and global transformation. Their diversity fuels cross-disciplinary collaboration and creative synergy—laying the groundwork for ideas and initiatives with far-reaching potential.

More than students, they are Ambassadors of Cameroon and Africa, embodying stories of resilience, academic excellence, and civic leadership. Coming together at Columbia is a powerful reminder that African excellence is not just present—it is thriving in global spaces.

This gathering also served as a space for connection, mentorship, reflection, and the rekindling of a collective commitment to give back—particularly to the next generation of aspiring Pre-Scholars in Cameroon. With the Open Dreams Summer Academy 2025 set to launch on July 7th, 2025, in Bamenda, Douala, and Yaoundé, these young leaders continue to shape the future by leading, mentoring, and innovating. They are the driving force behind the Open Dreams Summer Academy, with their first-hand experiences.

Young Cameroonians are rising, and Open Dreams is at the heart of that transformation. From MIT to Harvard, Princeton to Stanford, Columbia to Yale, Open Dreams Scholars are not just excelling—they are building bridges, breaking barriers, and creating pathways for many more to follow.
