Recently, Garoua welcomed Dr Zade Akras, a Neurosurgery Researcher from the prestigious Harvard Medical School. The visit was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the research collaboration between Harvard Medical School and the Neurosurgery Unit of Garoua Regional Hospital.

This partnership aims to foster the development and integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based solutions to enhance the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of patients suffering from neurological and neurosurgical disorders. Ultimately, these innovations are expected to contribute significantly to improving the quality of patient care and clinical outcomes.
Today, neurosurgical practice is increasingly benefiting from rapid technological advancements. Among these, Artificial Intelligence represents one of the most promising innovations for optimizing diagnostic accuracy, clinical decision-making, patient management, and long-term follow-up. Through this collaboration, both institutions will work toward integrating AI-driven tools across the entire continuum of patient care—from diagnosis and treatment planning to postoperative monitoring and rehabilitation.
Beyond advancing technological innovation, this visit also serves to reinforce the strong partnerships that have emerged through previous collaborative initiatives in Global Surgery, creating new opportunities for research, training, and knowledge exchange.
This initial mission lasted three days and laid the foundation for a long-term collaboration. Additional visits and joint projects are already being planned to further strengthen this partnership and ensure the successful implementation of future research initiatives.
There is little doubt that neuroscience now occupies a central place in the healthcare landscape of Garoua. Over the years, the city has evolved into a major referral center for the Grand North of Cameroon and neighboring countries in the diagnosis and management of disorders affecting the central and peripheral nervous systems.
Several recent achievements highlight this remarkable progress:
· Modern infrastructure and state-of-the-art medical technologies;
· Recipient of the Best Neurosurgery Research Award in Dubai (December 2025);
· Successful performance of complex neurosurgical procedures recognized internationally;
· A thriving neuroscience ecosystem encompassing clinical care, research, education, and innovation;
· A comprehensive range of services covering the full spectrum of neurological and neurosurgical disorders;
· A strong academic foundation with growing influence across the subregion.

Thanks to these advances and the incredible expertise of the renowned neurosurgeon, Dr. Ignatius Esene, Garoua is steadily establishing itself as a regional center of excellence in neuroscience and neurosurgery, with increasing recognition across Central Africa and beyond. Dr. Ignatius Esene is one of the model professionals setting the mentorship pace at Open Dreams in words and actions, which provide tangible solutions to some of the most pressing needs of the community.
