“God said no to my application… but yes to something even greater” - the visit to Notre Dame, USA | Ngolefac Emmanuel

Twice, I applied to the University of Notre Dame’s Keough School of Global Affairs.

Twice, I received a rejection.

At the time, I didn’t understand why.

Last week, God answered that question.

Instead of arriving on campus as a student, I walked through those iconic gates as a welcomed #guest, spending several unforgettable days learning from one of the world’s most prestigious universities.

Life has a beautiful way of reminding us that a closed door is not always a denied destiny.

Before visiting, I thought I knew the University of Notre Dame. I had attended webinars, explored its website, watched countless videos, and listened to alumni share their experiences.

But nothing prepared me for what I encountered in person.

Notre Dame is more than an exceptional university.

It is a community where academic #excellence and #faith walk hand in hand.

There is a spirit of purpose that fills the campus. You don’t simply see students preparing to become #engineers, #scientists, #business leaders, #architects, #lawyers, or global policy experts—you see young people being formed into compassionate leaders committed to #serving humanity.

During our visit, my team and I explored several outstanding schools, including the renowned Mendoza College of Business, the College of Engineering, the College of Science, the College of Arts and Letters, the School of Architecture, the Keough School of Global Affairs, and Notre Dame Law School.

One conversation particularly stayed with me.

I learned that Notre Dame is need-blind for undergraduate admissions. Even more inspiring, the university guarantees to meet 100% of every admitted student’s demonstrated financial need through grants and scholarships, without requiring loans.

As someone who has dedicated his life to helping students access life-changing educational opportunities, those words touched my heart.

It means that brilliant students should never allow financial limitations to stop them from dreaming boldly.

Talent, character, determination, and service still matter.

The university also invests deeply in the success of every student through exceptional academic support, career development, mental health resources, leadership opportunities, and a campus culture that challenges students to become a force for good in the world.

With undergraduate applications opening this August, I have one message for every student reading this:

Do not reject yourself before a university has the opportunity to know your story.

Apply.

Believe.

Dream bigger than your circumstances.

You may be exactly the kind of student they are looking for.

One of the most personal moments of my visit happened inside the magnificent Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

Standing there in prayer, I smiled because I remembered every application, every unanswered question, and every moment of disappointment.

My prayer was simple:

“Father, thank You for allowing me to spend time at a university I have always admired—not as a student, but as a privileged visitor. Thank You for reminding me that Your plans are always better than mine.”

God answers prayers.

Sometimes He opens the door you were asking for.

Sometimes He opens an even bigger one you never imagined.

As I left Notre Dame, I wasn’t thinking about the opportunities I had missed.

I was thinking about the thousands of young people whose lives can be transformed if they simply dare to apply.

I believe many of the students I mentor today will one day walk these same paths as Notre Dame students.

And by God’s grace, perhaps one day, our own children will too.

Keep dreaming.

Keep believing.

Keep serving.
